The OPAP Limassol Marathon GSO, an international event and the largest sports event in Cyprus with 15,000 runners, took place on 23 and 24 March this year. It was the first year in which organisers partnered with GivenGain to help make runners’ marathons more meaningful.

Crowdfunding is a developing industry in Cyprus and the event has historically focused on offline fundraising, so our team expected uptake for the first year to be gradual. Starting just five months before the event, Jannie Smith, GivenGain’s Operations Manager, worked with marathon staff to promote the fundraising concept and implement Limassol’s #makeitcount social impact campaign.

As it turned out, an incredible £28,085 was raised by just 32 fundraisers for 22 charities. Top charity Pancreatic Cancer UK raised £15,376 through the event, moving Hannah Weston, the charity’s Events Manager, to call the experience “overwhelming”.

We can’t wait to see what next year’s marathon has in store!
